Digital Veterinary Records
Delivering access to your dog's most important documents

Woofz
Woofz is a dog training and health tracking app. Though Woofz has a heath tracking feature by way of daily mood and symptom recording, many users have expressed interest in more robust health features.
GOAL
Discover, design, test and improve the best solution based on user centered research.

User Centered Design Process
My team and I are sure to design with the user's voice in mind.
RESEARCH
Investigate user wants and needs via interviews, reviews, and surveys.
Analyze comparator brands, features, and user flows.
SYNTHESIS
Isolate core insights via categorization and Affinity Mapping.
IDEATE & DESIGN
Sketch, wireframe, and prototype multiple iterations of solutions.
USER TESTING
Verify and refine results via usability testing.
RESULTS & NEXT STEPS
Build clickable prototype. Record feedback and outcomes to support further progress.

Research and Discovery
Interviews revealed core user sentiments that we used to design our solution.
USER INTERVIEWS
Completed 7 user interviews probing for:
-
Pet care general
-
Daily routine
-
Pet related apps used
-
Veterinary experiences
AFFINITY MAPPING
Similar sentiments were grouped and organized to help us understand user perspective.

KEY USER INSIGHTS
From this we distilled the user's voice into core insight statements.

"It's really important to communicate my dog's care requirements."

"I have a daily routine for my dog."

"I use multiple apps for my dog."

"It can be miserable dealing with the vet."

"I have a dog with unique needs."

"I need some help caring for my dog."

"I don't have a good method for tracking my dog's medications."

"I scramble when I have to exchange pet info with professionals."
Comparative Research
Once we understood what our users were saying, we wanted to take a closer look at some comparable services.
COMPARATORS
After trimming down a long list of competitors and comparators with our users insight, we decided to examine these five services.

OUTCOME
Even when performing a task that is key to the core offering of the app, we still see instances of lengthy user flows. Per our users suggestions we were sure to offer important features to users readily and effectively.
FEATURE INVENTORY
Comparators features and opportunities were analyzed against what users were asking for.

Personas
After collecting a ton of great data it was almost time to design some solutions. But before we could do that we wanted to be sure we were designing with the users voice in mind!
PERSONA 1

Avery
Spot, Spike, & Beans
Bio
-
Experienced pet owner with multiple dogs in a range of ages
-
Has longtime vet they prefer to use
-
Relies on family and friends to pet-sit for the rare times they travel
-
Recent influx of work has made their morning schedule busier and they feel it might be easier to have someone come help walk their dogs on weekdays
Goals
-
Ensure their oldest dog is especially comfortable and receiving appropriate medical care
-
Stick within a reasonable budget for their pet care
-
Better communicate care instructions to pet-sitters
Frustrations
-
Their dogs all have different medicines, with different dosage schedules
-
Doesn’t trust strangers to know the different personalities and needs of their dogs
-
Hates discovering too late that a highly rated service is actually the most expensive
Needs
-
A more streamlined way to track dogs’ medicines and dosages
-
A way to track multiple dogs’ needs
-
A way to consolidate new care instructions and send them to anyone who watches her dogs
PERSONA 2
Bio
-
A brand new pet owner who recently adopted their puppy, Peanut
-
Overwhelmed with the process of getting Peanut set up with a new daycare
-
Wants to be sure they can get all of Peanut’s information to the people who need it, but worry they’re going to forget something important
Goals
-
Ability to send updates and information about the puppy to multiple people
-
Start Peanut on a good training and housebreaking routine
Frustrations
-
Doesn't know a good way to keep all their pet information safe but also easily accessible.
-
Not sure which of the many available service options are right for their dog
Needs
-
An easy way to compare puppy-care services in their area
-
A way to keep their information organized and on hand
-
Tools to help with training and maintaining a dog-care routine

Jamie
& Peanut
PERSONA 3

Sam
& Wally
Bio
-
A frequent traveller who loves to bring their beloved pup Wally on their trips
-
Struggles with finding daycare facilities in new cities and providing the appropriate paperwork
-
Worries that should they need emergency pet care while traveling, they won’t be able to remember important details about Wally’s medical history
Goals
-
Travel confidently knowing Wally will always have care wherever they are
-
Cut down on pre-travel preparation and the amount of paperwork they need to bring
Frustrations
-
Misses Wally when he’s staying with someone else and worries he’s not doing well
-
Each airline has different pet travel rules and restrictions
-
Hates running around trying to get the correct pet paperwork while prepping for a trip
-
Many daycares require a membership and they struggle to know which ones can actually take Wally in a new city
Needs
-
Easy access and transfer their dog’s medical history and information
-
suitable daycare services while traveling
-
To know airlines’ requirements and pet restrictions in advance

User Flow Scenarios
Developed usage flows and specific scenarios for our personas to help direct the design of the solution.
SHARE VACCINE DOCUMENT
Avery loves giving their dogs lots of attention, but has recently been unusually busy at work. A friend recommended a doggie daycare they use and Avery signed their dogs up. Avery is able to easily share their dogs' required vaccination history with the doggie daycare, right from their phone.

ADD A NEW DOG
Jamie has recently adopted a new dog into their family. They want to keep track of and organize events and data for this new dog along side their previous dog.

SET MEDICATION REMINDER
Sam is usually very good at staying on top of their dog’s daily routine, however, after a recent vet visit, their dog has a new medication to take. Just to make sure they never miss a dose, Sam makes sure to set a daily reminder for the added peace of mind.

Design & Iteration
It was time to come up with some solutions.
DESIGN STUDIO
The team took time to individually develop some solutions. We brought our individual solutions together to create a hybrid design with our best iterations.

PROTOTYPE 1 - LOW FIDELITY
Those first iterations led to the design of our first clickable prototype.

Prototypes & Usability Testing
We tested our designs and refined our solutions.
GOAL
-
Collect real user data and feedback to uncover pain-points, insight, and opportunities

METRICS
-
Dialogue around impressions and expectations
-
Ability to successfully perform tasks
-
Time to complete the task
-
Number of clicks
-
Error rate and what issues were encountered
METHOD
-
Remote moderated tests
-
Find and send the vaccination information for Spot to the Doggie Daycare
-
Add a second dog profile
-
Setup daily notifications to give your dog medicine

PROTOTYPE 2 - MID FIDELITY
Feedback from our fist prototype helped us design a more intuitive and accessible interface.
HEAT MAP TESTING
Using Maze, we were able to analyze where users are interacting with the interface, highlighting errors and clear successes.

PROTOTYPE 3 - HI FIDELITY
The final round of iterations resulted in this hi-fidelity prototype. Using the feedback from our previous iterations and tests, we were able to increase success rates and lower average task time.

ITERATION FOR THE FUTURE
Our latested users loved the new designs but there's always room for more feedback. Here are some iterations we would consider when moving forward with this project.
"Can i add a new dog from the profile page?"
"I missed the reminder button because I didn't know the cards scrolled."
"I clicked the word "Add" on the action card thinking it was a button."
"Can clicking the dog profile pic take me to the dog's profile?"
REFLECTION
Although I really enjoyed delving into all the separate facets that went into this project, I very was happy to spearhead the research portion. Providing lots of clear and intentional data, direct from our users, as well as creatively captured from comparators, provided the direction and intention of this project.

Additionally the multiple rounds of detailed testing were extremely interesting and impactful. I'm hopeful to expand on these testing practices on further projects.
